How Cigarette Smoking Makes You Cool

One of my friends is a non-smoker, and he says that he only want to try smoking to look cool. This, I think, has been one of the main reasons why many students smoke. I’m certain that only a few do it to take away stress, since they’re too young to experience stress in their lives. But what I’m most curious about is the association that is made between smoking and action stars. It seems as if to be a cool-looking action star, you need to have a lit cigarette in your mouth while holding a certain type of gun.

I most certainly have seen a lot of male movie stars that are made to be a heavy smoker or simply have a stick of lit cigarette hanging on their lips in the film, and I really didn’t see them as cool way back when I was still around my grade school days. What I thought was cool was the way they handled their characters while holding a double berretta, a Gatling gun, or a sub-machine gun on each hand, and even those guys who knew how to defeat enemies tenfold their number using their bare hands.

Now that I’m a bit older, I think that I’m starting to see these actors as cool, but I still see bare-handed protagonists way cooler. This effect of being a badass because of smoking is easily seen from screen actors, but for women, it is quite a different thing. Many find women who smoke sexy and provocative, and I think this could be observed around the early years when the cars were still manually pumped just to get them going.

In the real world, I believe, there is no real cool thing about smoking cigarettes. Sure, you could look like the action stars you idolize if that’s how you want to see yourself, but as you age, you will definitely be experiencing a lot of health issues, especially if you live a sedentary lifestyle and frequently treat yourself in fast foods and in the bar. Personally, I think the cooler ones are those who’ve been smokers but have managed to go into the right direction by quitting from smoking and living a healthier life. Or if your a gadget geek, you could always use electronic cigarettes ;)
